Girls Names - "I Lose" by Tough Love

Proud to announce our new single, "I lose" which is to be released as a split 7" with the awesome Brilliant Colors taking on the flip with their track, "You Win". Get it?

This is a co-release with Slumberland in the US and Tough Love in the UK and will also feature on our debut LP out early next year.

All info right here.

London Again

We're off to London for a long weekend. Haven't been since May, so if you're about town pop down to the shows. Really looking forward to seeing the bands we're playing with and also seeing Blank Dogs on Saturday and Naked On the Vague/Grass Widow/Wetdog on Sunday! Beats a wet weekend in Belfast. x

Imprint this on your mind

Want to hear some new songs from a our forthcoming LP? Well then get a listen to a live session we recorded with Simon Mateer at MFR Studios for Imprint this on Your Mind, a local podcast based here in Belfast. By the way the LP will be out through Slumberland(US) and Tough Love(UK) in the new year. News on a very special split 7" to come trés soon.

Check out the Podcast here.

Young & Research

<a href="http://toughloverecords.bandcamp.com/track/falling-live-session">&quot;Falling (live session)&quot; by Tough Love</a>

Our UK Label Tough Love has released a free 15 tracklabel sampler which features a live session version of our Julee Cruise song, Falling (above). Also included are Sea Pinks, Weird Dreams, Cymbals and Prize Pets to name but a great few. Download it at Tough Love's bandcamp now.

Monday 6 September 2010

Sea Pinks out now!

Hey Neil here, some of you might like to know I have another project called Sea Pinks and that I've just put out a tape/download album on Cass/Flick which you might like to buy and listen to. Or maybe not. Either is ok with me X

New La La Vasquez

Our old tour buddies La La Vasquez have 3 new songs on their myspace from their upcoming 7", soon to be released on the consistently great Sex is Disgusting label. 'Kill' and 'Williamsburg' were always my live favourites so it's great to hear them finally committed to tape, literally. Kudos to Henry from Lovvers for working the mix-magic in his studio.

Making the Magic

Claire took some photos of us mixing the LP the other week. I suppose we'll have to break some news soon...

S>F>S>G>S>

Take a flip over to our fellow Captured Tracks Alumni chums Silk Flower's blog to see some cool pics of their latest visit to our Irish shores. As can be seen a fun packed weekend was had by all, featuring Sea Glass collecting in Dublin (see pic above), Joe Greene's cat - Kitty Twist, Patrick Kelleher, Peter and Jamie Wolves, the normally unstoppable super human party force that is Mark Reid finally succumbing to 2 nights without sleep, Kerry and Ali B, John Maus Graffiti (Oh Yeah!), the invention of Pass the Rock and myself hung over trying to hold down the worst veggie fry i've ever eaten. They insisted on going to Maggie Mays, please take note that i highly recommend not going there!

Falling (Twin Peaks Theme)

Live rehearsal video by Chris Chris Scherer of Falling by Julee Cruise. We recorded a live session of this today with Simon Mateer at MFR Studios, Belfast. More on that soon.

Felt Corner and The Make Up Manifestation

How cool is this? Dragon Records, Belfast's newest rekkid shop not only stocks the best records in town (including some of our last copies of our Captured Tracks EP) but has probably the coolest wall display ever. That's right, a 10 albums in 10 years Felt sleeve wall. Not only that, there's also a pretty cool The Make Up wall as well with rare posters, one of which came direct from K records a few weeks back to complete the collection. Rumours of Lawrence and Ian Svenonious flying in to officially open their respected altars have not yet been confirmed... or denied!Good excuse for some videos then.

Brothel Creepers

Have a look at this performance on The Knocking Shop of Lawrence which we recorded one hung over Sunday morning in May at The Stag's Head bar in Dalston, London. This was probably the hottest little room in the world. Nathan Barley meets the Young Ones i suppose.

This track will be on our LP which is to be released on ??????????? Records before the year's out. All will be revealed soon!

Back To Mono

Last time we were in glasgow in march it was buck freezing and we took refuge at mono where we perused records we couldn't afford and ate tasty vegan burgers galore (probably the only semi-healthy thing we ate on tour). This time hopefully it won't be sleeting out and we can hang out outdoors a little more, but we're glad to be going back to mono to play with lots of cool bands too, maybe see you there!

Tough Luck

Sorry to announce that we have had to pull out of our slot at the Tough Love Birthday Bash All Dayer on the 24th July. I am preettay preettay gutted. That line up is pretty special.

On the flip reverse though, fellow Captured Tracks alumni Silk Flowers shall be playing at this in the Menegarie, Belfast on the same night. Every cloud maybe...

More Sticky Love

We had the honour of playing with the best band in the world last night! I can't remember the last time i was so nervous before a show as i was last night while watching The Sticks.

Our old sparring partners La La Vasquez were amazing too! Their new songs are sounding great and their new shiny 7" out now is looking and sounding so good. BUY IT!!!

Imagine going to Brighton and not even getting to the beach or bringing home a stick of rock. Being back in Belfast sucks right now.

Release Parties

Anyone who has ordered our mini-album out next week on Tough Love will be glad to see that these are almost ready to go as can be seen here.

THESE ARE SOLD OUT IN THE UK. There are only a few final copies available to buy this Saturday night at the Stag's head in Dalston or else in Japan. (Yes, i know, very clichéd)

Also tomorrow night in Belfast we are throwing a party at The Menagerie to celebrate our EP out now on Captured Tracks - better late than never. The Not Squares dudes and J Carberry of Cheap Thrill will be playing records all night long! Details here.

Also thanks to everyone who bought records and shit from us last night in Dublin at the Dum Dum Girls show. We appreciate it so much!We had fun.

Friday 14 May 2010

Norman says we're Hot Shit

Norman Records put us in the hottest shit category for this week which can only be a good thing. Read what they said about us here. I guess it's cool being compared to bands you've never heard of before!

So now we've finally got some records in our possession (thanks Captured Tracks!) we're putting a last minute release party together which is to be held in The Menagerie next Thursday evening(20th May). So far confirmed are Not Squares and Cheap Thrill DJs with more to be announced in the next few days! Spread the word and come down to buy some records so we can afford to go to England next weekend...

A few remaining copies are available at Rough Trade

Thanks!

No Echo For Me Tonight

I shan't be going to see Echo and the Bunnymen tonight as it is sold out, no doubt to our great city's cultured elite. Oh No!
I'm mostly relieved, as a fan who has never seen them live, i'm worried it'll be rubbish (like most of these 'old bands' are) and Ian McCulloch just isn't the young, pretty and hip scally he once was:

Instead i think i'll just stick on Crocodiles and watch some of this...

Pick up Sticks

We're totally stoked to be playing with The Sticks next month in Brighton. And also playing on the bill is our BFFs La La Vasquez. Beats a wet Sunday afternoon in Belfast, i'll say!

Anyway, The Sticks album on the can-do-no-wrong Upset the Rhythm is awesome and i've been giving it a whirl a lot recently. Great driving music too - If you ever have to drive a Land rover Defender from Huddersfield to Belfast, it makes for essential listening. Go buy it right here now!

Watch these Stickmen in action:

That other photo with me in was bloody awful so just to prove I was actually on tour here's a couple of snazzier ones with me in done by someone at the london show - thanks to them!

You Should Know By Now

The super rad dudes at Tough Love Records in London have just put up our next recorded output for pre-order right here. It's entitled, "You Should Know By Now" and will take the shape of a super limited 12" vinyl (only 100!!!) with no fewer than 8 tracks... Holy Smokes!
The artwork's pretty sweet too.

Poster

This very good poster was done by a guy called Tom Bingham so super thanks to him! Cracked Upstart is an anagram of Captured Tracks by the way cos we're both putting out records (today!) on that label see. Also, this is totally unrelated but there's a good thing on radio 4 this morning at 11.30am about Billy Childish, listen here.

This was on ebay a couple of weeks ago, with apparently no irony intended. Amazingness.

It's So Nice When It's Something that you like

Admittedly I don't know much about Hurrah! but i do love their song Around and Around that appears on the CD86 compilation that came out a few years back marking the 20th anniversary of C86. I've been listening to it a lot recently, actually. This song sounds like it's going to be like any other generic jangly indiepop number, that is until 38 seconds in when the drums break down to that awesome primal beat and the bass rumbles and purrs so sinisterly while an almost feather like, other-worldly glistening guitar is strummed so delicately until it goes somewhere else completely different, and then...back - Hairs stand on end. There is something else going on here.

Maybe i don't want to know anymore; maybe i just don't need to know anymore...

Look at this cool made for TV video which appeared on The Tube when i was but a twinkle in my father's eye.

Sunday 7 March 2010

We Like Ganglians

Ganglians are touring in a couple of months, but Girls Names will be playing in london the night they're in belfast so we'll miss it, which sucks but you can't complain when actual people in london want to put on your band, which is great of course. One of the sweet things about being in GNs (and JL, and the rest) is getting to play with so many cool people when they pass through belfast, where there isn't much in the way of decent competition for cool support slots. We both love ganglians so would have jumped at the chance to play that show, but I guess it's someone else's turn by now, the fuckers. And maybe we'll catch them in the big smoke if we stick around long enough. They're great for a spring clean on a bonny sunday anyways:

Dennis Rules

If you're stuck for something to do tonight you could do a lot worse than check out this dennis wilson doc full of amazing archive footage and interviews with lots of people who knew him. Cool to learn he hit the snare with his right hand too, like all the best drummers. Best be quick tho cos it's only up for one more day!

Update 07/03: It's up for another week! Whoop!

Falling and Laughing

Photobucket

Anyone see Edwyn Collins on the BBC News this morning with his wife Grace? It was a quite the pleasant surprise of a Thursday morning. From what i gathered a softback version of Falling and Laughing, the book Grace wrote about dealing with the aftermath of her husband's two brain hemorrhages, has just been put out. I highly recommend a read of it.

Just found this video from his gig at the Black Box in Belfast in January playing Falling and Laughing, complete with false start. What a night!

And while we're all collectively swooning over a young Edwyn and early Orange Juice, here's a download of our version of Consolation Prize that we recorded really quickly one afternoon last June on my 4track. The guitar sounds so good. I forgot all about this. I think we might have played it live only twice last summer. Who knows, maybe it could get an outing again in the near future...

1-800-MICE

I just saw this on Silk Flowers blog, not sure what it means but I like it anyway. There are also some cute photos there of those guys frolicking on the beach somewhere, which is nice. Anyway if you saw it there (or anywhere else) first you must feel pretty cool right now:

Graveyard

cam grave

These were taken in Camlough Graveyard at the end of December 2008 or else the start of January 2009.

We have a song called "Graveyard" that will be included in our 12" EP that Captured Tracks are releasing later this month and some details of that can be found here.

Free London Show

Photobucket

We are playing at the Macbeth on Hoxton St in London tomorrow evening, 19.02.10.
This will be the first time we play in England and should be a nice warm up to our tour with La La Vasquez that kicks off in Belfast on Friday 26th March.

Tomorrow's show is totally FREE if you email info@supmag.com with 21 LDN in the subject line and apparently there's free vodka before 10 O'Clock if you're that way inclined.

Tuneyards and Gillespie Tonight

bobby
We are playing with Tuneyards(USA/Drag City, 4AD) tonight at the speakeasy in Queen's Union infront of what may turn out to be a load of indifferent, drunken students but we are looking forward to the challenge. Intrigued to hear what Tuneyards sound like and don't understand why they aren't headlining, this is Belfast though, and things are done differently here... Oh and it's a free gig.

Afterwards i'd recommend hot footing it across to the Menagerie for the first installment of David Holme's new clubnight, The Bad Books featuring a DJ set from Bobby Gillespie, who at one time may have had the best hair ever.
